School Houses
At ʱwe have numerous activities as interhouse competitions. Activities range from those which are sporting and cultural to speech and maths competitions. Students are allocated to houses as soon as they enrol at the school, encouraging student collegiality and a sense of belonging.
The original four house names used at ʱwere St Andrew, St David, St George, and St Patrick. Past students often still have a strong loyalty to these names and to the house colours and we acknowledge the attachment that people feel to their old houses; however, in 2024, it was decided to look at a renaming of the houses and the opportunity that this would bring to better represent the ʱcommunity and the aspirations we have for our students.
The four new house names are the names of four New Zealand native canopy trees: Kohekohe, Taraire, Tawa, and Towai. Canopy trees play an important role in the ecosystem of the bush. Above the canopy are the emergent trees, like the kauri, which is the symbol of Dargaville High School. Together, canopy trees support emergent trees, giving them the space to grow tall enough to reach the light they need to grow strong. Similarly, our four houses work together to strengthen ʱand create a successful school community where our students can achieve their potential.
